Never stop working ON the business

never stop workingThere is a coach, speaker or expert out there right now telling a business owner to work more ON their business. And she is right!

The reality is that most people end up hardly ever working ON their business; the maelstrom of events that constitutes an ordinary day somehow magically pop up and get in the way!

Here’s a simple way of ensuring you keep working on your business: Take your diary now and book in a day every month which is a ‘work on my business’ day.

On that day do not go to the office, go elsewhere. Hire a meeting room for the day. Sit at a cafe. Drive to the mountains. Allow yourself to step away from the business. If somebody asks, pretend it’s an important meeting with somebody (because it really is).

In the weeks leading up to the day, when something comes up in the business that frustrates you, that doesn’t work, or you see a competitor initiative you need to counter, note it down as an action item for your ‘work on my business’ day.

How much is enough? It depends on your business growth stage. Startups spend near 100% on the business. When the business  is mature you need to spend 5-10% of the time ON it.
