Reaching your goal and not knowing where to go next can be utterly deflating. Right now you might be thinking “but I’m having enough trouble reaching my current goal …”
Yes, but once you start believing in that goal, and you feel and act like you have already achieved it, it will come sooner than you think.
I have a couple of times set a real BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal). You know, the totally crazy 10–year–horizon–kind–of–a–goal. However, I managed to reach that long–term goal in just 2 or 3 years, and found myself in the vacuum called “now what?” It can totally kill your momentum. Certainly stopped me in my tracks.
Don’t be afraid to dream really really big, and work on setting goals that follow on from each other. That way you end up with “once I’ve done X, I can’t wait to do Y”. It means that your shorter–term goal just ends up being a great milestone on the much bigger journey.
It’s called prerequisites. What you have to do to do something else. What you need to complete before you’ve earned the right to take the next step up the ladder. Remember to keep the top of that ladder disappearing into the clouds.
