We have all learnt to focus. To get down to work. To ‘stick with it’. What happens when we’re wrong? For many ego gets in the way. Who wants to admit they’re wrong? It’s not exactly the socially cool thing in most circles.
Here’s a way around it: it’s called pivot. Pivoting is based on the fact that you can only make decisions based on what you know right now and what your assumptions about the future are… right now.
As you move your business forward you learn stuff. You test a product. Get feedback from prospects. Test a marketing method, ad type or tagline. And learn at every point from the feedback you get. These feedback points aggregate up to a point where you need a pivot.
In a recent business we initially thought the core of the business would be business networking. I soon realised that while the events were popular they were not financially viable without large sponsors.
I developed a new event format for a much larger, theme–focused event and we saw that not only did that event pull far more attendees, it was also viable. It was time to tweak the business plan and do a pivot.
So how do you grow faster? Pivot often. Many suggest a pivot every 1 – 2 months. Realise some are major course corrections, and some are minor adjustments, but all are important. Put it in your schedule—create a pivot day. Challenge your assumptions and grow faster.
